Current ATIS

Unless we have been flying for a very short time or in some cases even if we have, we need to get the local ATIS information again about the current conditions at the airport. I use the same laminated card and just correct the information that is currently there. I simply set my aircraft radio to 127.2 and record any changes. The hand held radio is put away behind the seats and at this point is available as a backup radio. The power of this radio is limited and the antenna that comes with it makes for rather limited usefullness in the air. I have a second antenna on the airplane that I can connect my hand held to tha would help some. Many pilots have two radios in their airplanes.
