Request To Land

We have to call the tower who we are, where we are, what we want to do and that we have the current ATIS information before we and receive a call back before we can enter the class "Delta" airspace. Of course we need to be nearby as calling too far out wouldn't be good. When the controller calls back with instructions I have to acknowledge the instructions with another call to the tower to confirm that I have heard and understand the instructions given. In this case I have to call them when I am two miles from the tower on a forty-five degree angle to runway 21 Left.
