ICOM A-2 Handheld
The first major purchase I made after acquiring 146 was a hand-held radio. The panel mounted radios were way beyond their useful life, and I felt a hand-held could be used in an emergency. My plans were to get a GPS and not use the VOR so I bought the A-2 model as it has no VOR. Although it will works with my Sigtronices headset, it would not with the David Clark headset I usually wear. I tried several times to have it modified but finally gave up and had it returned to its original condition. It has worked flawlessly since and really comes in handy. I use it to call the FBO for gas and obtain ATIS before getting into the plane for the most part. I see there are newer models out and I suppose they are fine. I don't suppose there are many used A-2s around as they work just fine and I can't imagine anyone upgrading just to get a smaller unit. So, I'm recommending ICOM radios in general, as mine has served me well.
